What does Social Sustainability mean to you?

Respect, kramar, justice, omtanke, sharing and caring, love, integration and equality. These are some of the answers that we got in the Studentdagen Hållbarhet last week. One of GloSS’s aims has from the beginning been to provoke discussion about social sustainability, what it is and how it can be pursued. This is a challenging task as there are no simple, all-encompassing definitions. Unlike math and statistics, social issues cannot be reduced to easy numbers and figures. My answer would’ve probably been, in addition to all of these, understanding and the will and ability to look at the world from another person’s perspective.
By giving out proverbs from different corners of the world at our stand, we wanted to challenge our/your every day way of thinking. Surprisingly often the message is the same – the choice of words just varies.

Happy Friday to you all and, as an Eskimo proverb goes, “May you have warmth in your igloo, oil in your lamp, and peace in your heart”!
Hilla/GloSS
